Senior ex-ADF officers name climate change as Australia's biggest threat

A roll name of senior ex-Defence officers and safety consultants have put their names to an open letter naming local weather change "the best risk to the long run and safety of Australians".
The letter, printed on the Australian Safety Leaders Local weather Group web site, referred to as on political leaders to make local weather change a major focus forward of the 2022 Federal Election.
"The primary responsibility of presidency is the protection and safety of the individuals, however Australia has failed with regards to local weather change threats," the letter learn.

"Australia at present has no credible local weather coverage, leaving our nation unprepared for more and more harsh impacts."
The signatories, together with former ADF Chief Admiral Chris Barrie, stated the present nationwide goal of reaching web zero emissions by 2050 was "wholly insufficient".
"Decarbonisation have to be reached as near 2030 as attainable," he stated.
"Accelerating renewables to safe vitality resilience in a conflicted world is important for Australia."

The letter listed the latest east coast floods and the Black Summer time bushfires as main threats to water and meals infrastructure, transport, and provide chains – "undermining our resilience as a nation".
"Throughout our area, local weather change is an existential risk to nations and communities, particularly these weak to sea-level rise," the letter learn.
"Globally, water and meals crises exacerbated by local weather change, together with inhabitants pressures, have resulted in escalating cycles of civil unrest and battle.

"Inevitably, weak individuals migrate from affected areas in rising numbers."
The signatories stated the problem required international co-operation.
"Whereas our allies are taking motion, climate-security dangers aren't being correctly assessed in Australia; we're ill-prepared, and failing in our obligations as a worldwide citizen and strategic defence ally," the letter learn.
"Local weather have to be made a direct safety precedence, on the prime of the nationwide agenda, with a dedication for mobilisation and emergency motion from all sides of politics."
