Brazil’s army chief fired in aftermath of capital uprising

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva fired Brazil’s military chief Saturday amid considerations over threats to the nation’s democracy following the Jan. 8 rebellion within the capital by far-right protesters.

The official web site of the Brazilian armed forces stated Gen. Julio Cesar de Arruda had been eliminated as head of the military. He was changed by Gen. Tomás Miguel Ribeiro Paiva, who was head of the Southeast Army Command.

In latest weeks, the navy has been focused by Lula after supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro stormed via authorities buildings and destroyed public property. Lula stated a number of instances in public that there have been undoubtedly individuals within the military who allowed the rioting to happen.

Rioters who stormed via the Brazilian Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Courtroom in Brasilia sought to have the navy intervene and overturn Bolsonaro’s loss to Lula within the presidential election.
