Mauna Loa volcano lava flow slows as it nears key Hawaii highway

Lava flowing from Mauna Loa, the world's largest energetic volcano, has slowed significantly. It's now oozing at a pace of lower than 50 yards per hour, that means it takes about two hours to maneuver the size of a soccer subject.

David Phillips, deputy scientist-in-charge of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, informed CBS Information there may be "no imminent menace" to residents on the west facet or the south facet of the island presently.  

But when Mauna Loa's circulate had taken a special path, the town of Hilo might have been within the bullseye. 

The Hawaii Emergency Administration Company stated Friday they deployed a group to Hilo to help with Hawaii County's emergency response.

"Whereas the lava is transferring very slowly in the mean time and would not pose an imminent hazard to populated areas, it is nonetheless a hazard with big harmful potential," Luke Meyers, the company's administrator, stated in a press release.
