The terrorist who killed 51 folks at two Christchurch mosques is interesting his conviction and sentence, claiming he was "beneath duress via torture".
Brenton Tarrant killed 51 folks and wounded 40 others when he carried out mass shootings at two Christchurch mosques – the Masjid an-Nur on Deans Ave and the Linwood Islamic Centre – on March 15, 2019.
In August 2020 he was sentenced to life with out parole after pleading responsible to 51 counts of homicide, 40 counts of tried homicide and a terrorism cost.
He has since filed an enchantment towards his conviction and sentence with the Courtroom of Attraction. No listening to date has been set at this stage.
The grounds of his enchantment state: "I solely entered a responsible plea beneath duress via torture."
Within the reasoning for submitting a late enchantment (normally to be performed inside 20 working days of sentencing), he claimed he had been "held beneath unlawful and torturous jail situations; vital authorized paperwork withheld from myself, fallout with earlier attorneys, irrationality purchased on via jail situations".
Talking on behalf of the March 15 Whānau Belief in 2020, Abdullah Naeem stated the terrorist was "taking part in video games".
Naeem, whose brother and father had been killed within the assault, hoped the enchantment wouldn't be allowed to go forward, so households wouldn't should undergo extra trauma.
"Life imprisonment is a light-weight punishment for what he did. Any good regulation will deny his plea and I hope that occurs."
Masjid an-Nur imam Gamal Fouda stated the terrorist "needs to develop into well-known and grandstanding", and he believed the courts ought to "proceed to ignore his identify".
"This example is inflicting additional trauma to the whānau and the terrorist shouldn't be given the chance to retraumatise all of us as New Zealanders."
