Army grounds hundreds of Chinook helicopters following engine fires

The U.S. Military confirmed Tuesday that it has quickly grounded its fleet of Chinook helicopters following a number of engine fires.

Military spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith informed CBS Information in an electronic mail that there have been a "small quantity" of Boeing H-47 Chinook helicopter engine fires. Gasoline leaks have been the "root trigger," Smith stated.

The fires didn't trigger any accidents, Smith added. She didn't disclose the precise variety of fires that had occurred.

The bottom order applies to about 400 helicopters, a U.S. official informed CBS Information.

Smith stated that the Military is "implementing corrective measures to resolve this challenge."

"The security of our troopers is the Military's prime precedence, and we are going to guarantee our plane stay protected and airworthy," Smith stated.
