Molly Dixon, a Cairns native, filmed a whole lot of tiny fish beaching themselves on coral sand at Fitzroy Island, whereas she was visiting along with her sister.
Dixon is heard exclaiming "oh my god they're getting eaten" in video uploaded to TikTok on the finish of April.
Immediately, wildlife scientist Dr Vanessa Pirotta stated the behaviour was not unusual.
"No matter was chasing it did a superb job to drive the fish near shore. That is frequent escape behaviour from the fish," she instructed 9news.com.au.
"Security in numbers and by balling up and rotating usually is what we sometimes see in these intense bait balls.
"It's simply that they had been pushed in opposition to the shore and had nowhere to go therefore the frantic shifting round and again to water."
Marine biologist Melissa Cristina Márquez agrees.
"Typically, smaller fish like these are seen leaping out of the water when they're being hunted by a bigger fish," Márquez stated.
"Smaller fish have a tendency to remain nearer to the shoreline and shallower waters to keep away from bigger predators within the deeper waters. Nonetheless, bigger fish can enterprise into shallows to hunt smaller fish - which may trigger them to scatter, swim away, or soar like this in hopes of getting away.

Mates' fishing journey nearly ruined by big shark
Dixon stated the encounter put her and her sister off swimming that day.
"My sister and I had been about to go for a dip earlier than we observed all of the fish swimming in the direction of us," she instructed 9news.com.au.
