Anonymous donor pays tab for graduates of historically Black college in Texas: "You are debt-free"

College students graduating from a traditionally Black school in East Texas have been instructed at their graduation ceremony that an nameless donor had paid their balances, officers mentioned.

Wiley School mentioned in a information launch that over 100 college students have been gathered for commencement Saturday when the college's president made the announcement. The school posted a video of the ceremony with the scholars being instructed, "You might be debt-free. You don't owe the faculty a penny."

"We're continuously speaking with donors to help college students in these methods in order that they will start their after-college expertise with much less debt," Herman J. Felton Jr., Wiley's president and CEO, mentioned within the information launch.

The school mentioned within the information launch that the estimated whole for the balances owed to the faculty by the graduating class of 2022 was about $300,000.

Named in honor of Bishop Isaac T. Wiley, Wiley School was based in 1873. The school is a primarily liberal arts, residential, co-educational, baccalaureate degree-granting establishment affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

The 2007 film "The Nice Debaters" starring Denzel Washington was impressed by a debate in 1935 during which Wiley prevailed over the College of Southern California's nationally recognized, powerhouse group at a time when the nation was closely segregated.
