Police arrived within the suburb of Grey in Palmerston, about 9am ACST (10:30am AEDT) to discover a man armed with a weapon, based on Northern Territory Police Assistant Commissioner Michael White.
He mentioned police referred to as on the person to drop the weapon, which witnesses have described as a spear.
"Sadly various pictures had been fired by police, injuring a male," Assistant Commissioner White mentioned.

The incident occurred simply a number of hundred metres from Sacred Coronary heart Major College.
Police blocked off entry to each Victoria Drive and Priest Crescent following the incident, whereas St John Ambulance confirmed the person had been taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a crucial situation.
Assistant Commissioner White mentioned police had not confirmed the id of the person, however confirmed he was Indigenous.
He mentioned police had been referred to as to an incident within the space earlier within the morning, which had led to an individual being hospitalised with accidents.
Assistant Commissioner White mentioned it was unclear but whether or not the sooner incident was associated.
He mentioned police had been totally investigating each why the person was armed in a public place and the circumstances surrounding the police taking pictures.
"Use of power is one thing that police need to do, it's not one thing that we need to do," he mentioned.
"We do not come to work on a regular basis considering that we'll injure somebody or that we'll be concerned in a police taking pictures."
