A Tasmanian water bombing helicopter pilot has been hailed a hero after crashing to his loss of life combating a bushfire within the state's north.
The 41-year-old northern Tasmanian man had been combating a blaze that had burned via greater than 1600 hectares when he crashed close to Pipers Brook, about 40km north of Launceston, on Monday afternoon.
Police confirmed his loss of life on the scene after being referred to as to a discipline close to Pipers Brook Street about 3.20pm.
